light rain is falling in spots early this morning. temperatures will be cooler north and west of des moines and this is where it will be icy. a winter storm warning is in effect until 6 pm in between atlantic and mason city. the city of metro is under an advisory until 6 pm. this morning a mix of some snow, freezing rain, and rain will fall in central iowa. the precipitation will be all snow in northwest iowa through the day. we may see some slushy snow mix in with the precipitation on and off through the day in des moines, especially north and west of the metro. but overall, the afternoon for the city of des moines looks to be primarily rain. less than an inch of snow may fall in des moines by the time the system pulls out tuesday morning. northwest iowa is were the snow will accumulate and is where 3 to 6" is possible. only rain will fall in southeast iowa. the rest of the week will be sunny and dry with seasonal temperatures back in the low 40s for

now to our other top story... an overnight shooting in des moines. police say one person was shot... after already being the target of another crime. it all started in the 29 hundred block of cottage grove avenue... in the drake neighborhood. police say at least one suspect invaded a home there... around 11 p -m. the homeowner chased them out and down the street... before being shot. the victim was taken to the hospital. no word on any suspects in the case. the incident prompted a drake bulldog alert. that's when drake sends out alerts to students living nearby. des moines police are following up on some leads in a deadly downtown shooting. this occurred just after one yesterday morning... at court avenue and 3rd
edmund perez with a gunshot wound... he later died at the hospital. 23 year old andrew hurley-boyd was also shot... and is still being treated. police haven't identified a suspect... but say they have a lot of information from witnesses... i mean it's unfortunate that it happened in our entertainment district, court avenue is a nice place to go. we can't judge any one neighborhood based on the actions of one individual. hopefully it won't turn to that - the person who is responsible for this is the one who pulled the trigger. and that's where our focus is right now police say they'll release more information on the case this afternoon. the man accused of hitting and killing a cyclist in the metro will stand trial beginning today. jonathan leyva is charged with homicide by o - w - i. he plead not guilty in september. police say levya struck wade franck with his vehicle along grand avenue in august. they say his blood alcohol content was nearly 3 times the

authorities say leaving the gas pump while filling up your vehicle could be dangerous... they're pointing to an incident at a gas station in hiawatha as an example. they say the driver left his vehicle to go inside the state... and the pump didn't click off. that caused 15 to 20 gallons of gas to spill all over the ground. crews cleaned up up before anything happened. authorities also say you shouldn't wait inside your vehicle... they say static electricity from getting out and touching the pump could create sparks. people can weigh in on proposed budget cuts for the west des moines school district... the district is trying to trim up to 850 thousand dollars from its budget of 150 million. a committee recommended certain programs be eliminated to save money... the japanese and german foreign language offerings would be affected the most. the district is holding a public
input session tonight at the learning resource center. it starts at 6 - 30. the school board is expected to vote on the cuts next month. today cyclone nation will be formally introduced to its new football coach... matt campbell arrived in ames yesterday. campbell has agreed to a six year contract... with a two million dollar salary for the first year. he spent the last four years as toledo's head coach... winning 70 percent of his games. three of those four seasons ended with at least nine wins. he's the third football coach hired by iowa state athletic director jamie pollard... and replaces paul rhoads. ...keep rolling. campbell is scheduled to speak at a press conference at noon.
